China Merchants Energy Shipping (CMES) is moving ahead with a significant fleet expansion, placing an order for eight container vessels with its affiliated shipbuilder, China Merchants Industry Group, pending shareholder approval, according to DynaLiners.
The order includes four 1,800 TEU container ships and four larger 8,200 TEU units equipped with scrubbers and designed to be methanol-ready, reflecting a focus on future fuel flexibility and emissions reduction.
The total investment is estimated at approximately USD 558 million. Each of the smaller vessels is priced at around USD 34 million, while the larger ships are valued at about USD 105 million apiece.
The move underlines CMES’s strategy to modernise its fleet while aligning with evolving environmental standards in global shipping.
