Chinese ports close to 70 million TEUs in Q1, lower volumes for Shanghai and Shenzhen

The overall container volume of major Chinese ports rose 3.5% year-on-year from January to March reaching 69.7 million TEUs.

For the same period, the overall cargo volume of the Chinese ports climbed to over 3.8 billion tons translating to a year-on-year growth of 6.2%.

The following chart shows the cargo throughput and container throughput data of the twelve major ports in China.

As seen in the table, the port of Shanghai has remained the busiest port of the country with 11.47 million TEUs, despite its year-on-year container volume decline.

The port of Ningbo & Zhoushan is the second busiest box port in China with 8.19 million TEUs, achieving a year-on-year increase of 3.5%. In the third place, we find the port of Shenzhen with 6.17 million TEUs, however with a year-on-year drop of 4.9%.

Meanwhile, the largest percentage growths were registered at the ports of Dalian, Yinkou and Rizao. Dalian marked a year-on-year container growth of 19.7%, Yinkou achieved a 16.9% increase and Rizao saw its TEU volumes rise 15.8%.

On the other hand, Shanghai and Shenzhen were the only ports that suffered a container volume decline. Shanghai reported a 6.4% container volume decrease, while Shenzhen port saw its box throughput fall by 4.9%.
