The Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller Center for Zero Carbon Shipping welcomes clean energy provider CF Industries, which has announced it is committed to collaborating and contributing in the long term to the development of zero carbon technologies and solutions for the shipping industry.
The Center’s CEO, Bo Cerup-Simonsen, said, “As a US-based producer, CF Industries brings additionality to the Center’s established partner portfolio from both a geographical and a value chain perspective.”
As an ammonia producer, CF Industries gives access to know-how and experience in the safe production, storage, transportation and trade of ammonia. At the same time, it supports global decarbonisation, as it is expected to produce almost 2 million tons of low-carbon ammonia production capacity by 2024.
CF Industries will even install a 20 MW electrolyzer to enable the production of green ammonia at its Donaldsonville Complex in Louisiana,
“As the world transitions to low carbon alternative energy sources in order to realise net zero carbon emissions, collaboration across industries is critical to accelerate the development of achievable solutions,” commented Tony Will, president and chief executive officer at CF Industries Holdings, Inc.
“We believe ammonia has an important role to play in the world’s transition to clean energy and is a particularly promising approach for the maritime industry,” he added.
The shipping sector is responsible for 3% of global carbon emissions, a percentage that is likely to increase in the future. Achieving the long-term goal of decarbonation requires new types of fuel and at the same time systemic change across the industry.
