Bureau Veritas (BV) has marked the start of construction of the world’s first 271,000-cbm LNG carrier at Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding in China.
The vessel is the largest LNG carrier ever built. It also marks China’s first project to construct an LNG carrier of this size. BV will class six vessels in the series.
The 344-metre vessel features the latest NO96 Super+ membrane containment system. It offers 57% more cargo capacity than a conventional 174,000-cbm LNG carrier.
The design also improves energy efficiency and environmental performance. The daily boil-off rate is limited to 0.087%, reducing cargo losses during transport. A dual-fuel propulsion system and an optimized hull further lower fuel consumption and emissions.
The vessel complies with IMO Tier III environmental requirements. It is also compatible with most major LNG terminals worldwide, allowing greater flexibility on long-haul trade routes.
The project builds on previous cooperation between BV and Hudong-Zhonghua on ultra-large container ships and LNG bunkering vessels.
BV will provide classification and technical support throughout construction. The society will work with the shipyard and owner to help deliver the vessels on schedule and to class requirements.
