BNSF expands Overhaul partnership to strengthen intermodal cargo security

BNSF Railway has expanded its exclusive partnership with Overhaul to improve cargo security across its 32,500-mile rail network in North America. The agreement strengthens the companies’ existing collaboration, which has been in place for nearly a decade.

The partnership combines BNSF’s security systems and police department with Overhaul’s real-time cargo monitoring technology. The aim is to identify potential threats earlier, prevent cargo theft and improve the response to security incidents involving intermodal shipments.

Under the expanded arrangement, BNSF and Overhaul will share verified security information directly, allowing teams to respond more quickly to suspicious activity. The system monitors shipments for signs of tampering, fraud and organized cargo crime.

Faster response to cargo security threats

The partnership connects Overhaul’s security operations with the BNSF Police Department, allowing both teams to coordinate their response when potential threats are detected.

BNSF special agents can also work with local, state and federal authorities when incidents involve multiple jurisdictions. The railway’s Resource Operations Call Center supports this process by maintaining continuous communication with Overhaul’s security personnel.

According to Overhaul, its monitoring services achieve a 99.9% shipment protection rate for freight covered by the system. The figure applies to monitored shipments rather than all cargo transported across BNSF’s network.

“Working with Overhaul’s verified intelligence advances our prevention-first approach to supply chain security,” said Will Johnson, Chief Special Agent and Assistant Vice President of BNSF Police.

The expanded agreement comes as the companies seek to address increasingly sophisticated cargo theft and fraud affecting freight transportation.

BNSF has not disclosed the financial terms of the partnership or provided a timetable for further deployment.
