Berg Propulsion will open a new office in Mumbai as the marine propulsion specialist expands its presence in India’s growing shipbuilding market.

The office is scheduled to open on 1 January 2027 and will become the company’s main base for supporting customers and shipyards across India.

Berg targets Indian shipbuilding market

The expansion builds on Berg Propulsion’s existing relationships with Indian shipyards, including Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE), Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) and Chowgule Shipyard.

Berg is also supplying propulsion packages for two 33.55-metre electric tugs currently under construction at KMEW Group’s facility in Mumbai.

The company sees further opportunities as Indian shipyards increase their focus on greener propulsion systems. These include hybrid configurations, variable-speed drives and controllable-pitch propeller systems.

Berg plans to target several commercial vessel segments, including newbuild tugs, dredgers and offshore support vessels.

Service network to expand across India

The Mumbai office will be led by Amrita Singh, who will become General Manager after previously serving as Berg Propulsion’s Account Manager for New Sales.

She will be supported by Prasenjit Roy, a former Indian Navy Commander and former Programme Manager for Commercial Shipbuilding at GRSE.

Alongside the new office, Berg plans to establish a network of trained service agents in Mumbai, Kochi and Visakhapatnam. The company will also recruit locally and introduce training programmes to build its service capabilities in the country.

“Our focus will be on identifying and supporting projects where Berg solutions add value, enhance efficiency and reduce emissions,” said Singh.

The Mumbai operation could eventually support customers elsewhere in South Asia, including Sri Lanka.
