Asia–Europe container exports hit 1.88M TEUs in January

Shandong Marine Corporation is set to expand its Malaysia–Indonesia Express (MIX) service by extending the route to Chittagong, Bangladesh.

Container exports from Asia to Europe reached 1.88 million TEUs in January. This marks a new monthly record and a 6% year-on-year increase. It is the third consecutive month of growth, according to the Japan Maritime Center (JMC) citing U.K. Container Trades Statistics (CTS).

By Origin:

  • China & Hong Kong: 1.53 million TEUs, up 5.8%
  • Other Northeast Asia: 128,577 TEUs, up 3.4%
  • Southeast Asia: 221,753 TEUs, up 8.8%.

By Destination:

  • North Europe: 1.14 million TEUs, up 3.6%
  • Western Mediterranean: 362,180 TEUs, up 10.2%
  • Eastern Mediterranean: 370,389 TEUs, up 9.8%.

Imports from Europe to Asia fell 7.8% to 421,619 TEUs, marking two consecutive months of decline.

By Origin:

  • North Europe: 279,426 TEUs, down 8.8%
  • Western Mediterranean: 64,179 TEUs, down 15.4%
  • Eastern Mediterranean: 78,014 TEUs, up 3.9%.

By Destination:

  • China: 207,893 TEUs, down 3.9%
  • Other Northeast Asia: 87,653 TEUs, down 8.9%
  • Southeast Asia: 126,071 TEUs, down 13%.
