APM Terminals Aarhus and Port of Aalborg launch new rail service

APM Terminals Aarhus and the Port of Aalborg have launched a new weekly rail service connecting the two Danish ports.

The new connection gives companies in Northern Jutland direct rail access to Denmark’s largest container terminal in Aarhus. From there, cargo can connect with international shipping networks.

The service also provides an alternative to the existing direct feeder connection between Aalborg and Hamburg.

According to the Port of Aalborg, the partnership aims to provide companies with more transport options. In addition, it supports efforts to shift more container traffic from road to rail.

Weekly rail connection between Aalborg and Aarhus

Initially, the train will operate once a week between the Port of Aalborg and APM Terminals Aarhus.

The two partners will monitor market demand. They will then assess whether additional departures should be introduced.

“We are very pleased to see freight trains return to the port,” said Michael Rosenkilde Lind, Sales Manager at the Port of Aalborg.

He noted that companies in Northern Jutland compete in global markets and need access to efficient transport options.

For APM Terminals, the new service also strengthens the inland network connected to its Aarhus container terminal.

“There is significant potential in improving access between Northern Jutland and international container connections via Aarhus,” said Helle Almind, Head of Commercial at APM Terminals Aarhus.

New link supports intermodal transport

The rail service is linked to APM Terminals’ Inland Hub Northern Jutland.

According to Almind, the combination of the inland hub and the new rail connection brings customers in the region closer to international supply chains.

The service also creates another option for containers currently transported by road between Northern Jutland and other parts of Denmark.

APM Terminals said the connection supports more efficient use of infrastructure. At the same time, it contributes to the wider goal of moving more freight from road to rail.

The new rail service comes as Aarhus expands its container connectivity. Diamond Line is also launching its new Belgium-Scandinavia Express (BSX), with weekly calls at APM Terminals Aarhus from October.
