Union Maritime takes delivery of third WindWings-equipped LR2 tanker

Monza, LR2 Tanker fitted with two 37.5-metre WindWings®

BAR Technologies delivered the third WindWings®-equipped LR2 tanker to Union Maritime, marking another step in the commercial rollout of wind-assisted propulsion.

The vessel, Monza, features two 37.5-meter WindWings® rigid sails. It is part of the world’s first dual-fuelled LR2 tanker series combining LNG propulsion with wind-assisted technology.

Yangzijiang Shipbuilding built the vessel, while CMET manufactured the WindWings® systems.

The delivery comes as the International Maritime Organization continues debating future carbon pricing and emissions rules under its Net Zero Framework.

BAR Technologies said shipowners increasingly want technologies that cut emissions now without depending on future fuel availability or regulatory clarity.

WindWings® use a three-element rigid wing design that generates up to 2.5 times more lift than conventional sail systems. The system operates automatically and adjusts continuously to wind conditions without additional energy input.

BAR Technologies said the technology already delivers measurable fuel savings aboard vessels including Pyxis Ocean, Berge Olympus, and Union Maritime’s LR2 tanker fleet.

The Monza project also reflects growing cooperation between shipbuilders, technology firms, classification societies, and flag administrations to scale wind-assisted propulsion across commercial shipping.
