South Carolina Ports (SC Ports) has reached a new record for container handling during its fiscal year (FY) 2021 that started on 1 July 2020 and ended on 30 June 2021.
In particular, SC Ports saw a growth of 9.6% compared to the FY 2020, with 2.55 million TEU having been transferred through Wando Welch Terminal, North Charleston Terminal, and Hugh K. Leatherman Terminal.
Another record for the SC Ports during the FY 2021 was set at the two rail-served ports Inland Port Greer and Inland Port Dillon, which recorded a combined 192,844 rail moves, up 11.7% from the previous FY.
The vehicles sector has also remained strong, presenting an increase of 27%, compared to FY 2020.
In the meantime, SC Ports has achieved a monthly record at container volumes for the past four consecutive months.
Particularly, the container handling reached a monthly record during June with 231,758TEU, which translates to significant growth of 48.1% in comparison to June of 2020.
The Port of Charleston moved 128,622 boxes last month, a 44.5% increase from the same period of the previous year.
At the same time, Inland Port Greer reported 13,383 rail moves and Inland Port Dillon recorded 2,593 rail moves.
As demand for goods has been increased, SC Ports will provide enhanced infrastructure and ample capacity during the next year, in order to handle rising imports and cargo volumes, according to a statement.
"We have planned our capacity well for the next decade and beyond with the infrastructure that we are delivering," stated SC Ports President and CEO, Jim Newsome, who went on to add, "In the fiscal year 2022, we will continue to invest in our port to provide more capacity and reliability for our customers as we grow above the market."
