Power2X, Advario to build world’s largest sustainable aviation fuel facility in Rotterdam

Power2X and Advario are joining forces to establish a groundbreaking sustainable aviation fuel (e-SAF) and synthetic ultra-low carbon fuel hub at the Port of Rotterdam.

The collaboration will see the construction of the world’s largest e-SAF production facility to date, with an annual output capacity of over 250,000 tonnes. This volume of e-SAF is expected to fuel approximately 7,000 annual flights between Amsterdam in the Netherlands and New York in the United States.

The green methanol required for the process will be sourced from regions rich in renewable energy resources.

Advario is set to develop a sophisticated storage and logistics center within the Dutch port, featuring about 230,000 cubic meters of capacity, enhanced by marine and rail support to maintain a robust supply chain for these eco-friendly fuels.

The site’s advantageous location near key hydrogen pipelines and waterfront access underscores its potential as a cornerstone for sustainable energy development in one of Europe’s leading energy and chemical hubs.

Once operational, the facility is projected to supply 40% of the mandated e-SAF volume, cementing its role in Europe’s energy transition.

Occo Roelofsen, Founder and CEO of Power2X, emphasized the project’s strategic significance, stating that the project is going to pioneer next-generation energy infrastructures and expedite the energy transition.

Boudewijn Siemons, CEO of the Port of Rotterdam Authority, highlighted the broader impact of the project, which will meet nearly a quarter of Europe’s aviation fuel needs fulfilling future renewable aviation fuel requirements set by the European Union.

This ambitious project aims to reduce CO2 emissions by 90% compared to traditional jet fuel and establishes a new model for large-scale production of sustainable fuels in Europe.
