Port of Tokyo handles more than 2.15 million TEU in eight months

The Port of Tokyo has processed 2,151,234 TEU during the first eight months of 2021, which translates to around 5% increase from the corresponding period of the previous year, according to Japan International Freight Forwarders Association (JIFFA).

Regarding the January-August period, exports accounted for 621,927TEU and imports for 1,529,307TEU, representing a growth of 10.8% and of 2.7%, respectively. At the same time, empties recorded a decline of 12.2% year-on-year, totalling 687,817TEU.

Meanwhile, the major Japanese port recorded a year-on-year growth of 9% in August, handling 271,000TEU. In the eighth month of the yeat, imports rose by 7.7% compared to last year's August, completing 76,701TEU, while, according to JIFFA, exports totalled 194,303TEU, which translates to a year-on-year increase of 9.6%.

In contrast, empty containers saw a decline of 10.2% during August with 87,353TEU in total.
