Port of Rotterdam Authority to build new quay

The Port of Rotterdam Authority and Evos Rotterdam have signed an agreement for the construction of a new inland shipping berth to support a significant expansion of the Evos terminal in Europoort.

The agreement was formalised by Port of Rotterdam CEO Boudewijn Siemons and Evos CEO Daan Vos.

Evos Rotterdam is expanding its existing terminal, which currently comprises 21 tanks with a combined capacity of approximately 260,000 cubic metres, by adding five new storage tanks with a total capacity of 67,500 cubic metres dedicated to methanol, ethanol and their bio-based equivalents.

The additional berth is required to handle the increased transhipment volumes that the expanded storage capacity will generate.

The new quay, which will include shore power infrastructure, will be constructed by the Port of Rotterdam Authority and is expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2028.

By taking responsibility for the quay construction, the port authority is ensuring that the underlying infrastructure can accommodate further growth beyond the current expansion phase.

The development strengthens Rotterdam’s established position as a bunkering port and industrial hub for methanol and ethanol, both of which are regarded as important transition fuels and industrial feedstocks.

Methanol in particular is attracting growing interest from the shipping industry as a lower-emission alternative to conventional marine fuels, and demand for its storage and bunkering is expected to continue rising as the sector advances its decarbonisation agenda.
