Port of Los Angeles to receive US$8 million grant for cloud-based optimizer

The Port of Los Angeles’ Port Optimizer™ technology data portal is set for significant upgrades, thanks to a US$8 million grant from the California Governor’s Office of Business and Economic Development (GO-Biz).

This grant, the largest of five awarded by GO-Biz totalling US$27 million, aims to enhance data and supply chain functionality across California’s port network.

“We’re thrilled that this GO-Biz grant to the Port of Los Angeles will help fund three new components to its well-established Port Optimizer technology. Our state’s ports are critical to the stability of our national and global supply chains, and these historic grants will allow California ports and its stakeholders to benefit from its data sharing capabilities,” stated Dee Dee Myers, GO-Biz director and senior advisor to California Governor Gavin Newsom.

Launched in 2017, the Port Optimizer is a cloud-based platform in North America that digitalizes maritime shipping data for cargo owners and supply chain stakeholders through a secure single access point.

By integrating data from across the port ecosystem, the portal helps streamline port and supply chain operations, facilitating more predictable and timely delivery of goods to market.

The US$8 million grant will accelerate the development of three key enhancement tools for the Port Optimizer.

The grant will enhance the Port’s truck appointment system, enabling interoperability with the Port of Long Beach. This will create a comprehensive universal truck appointment system for the San Pedro Bay port complex, improving the management and movement of containers.

In addition, funding will support the development of CalPorts, a mobile app providing access to the Port Optimizer and other port dashboards. CalPorts will facilitate easier data exchange on cargo status, reduce supply chain disruptions, and enhance operational issue anticipation. Additionally, it will enable the sharing of environmental performance and port security data.

Furthermore, an online gateway will be developed to collect carbon impact data from port operations. This gateway will offer a near real-time Green Asset Score based on emissions from rail, trucking, vessels, and on-port equipment. Stakeholders can use this score to choose routes that optimize cargo speed and emissions impacts.

“This GO-Biz funding will help the Port of Los Angeles accelerate our proven technology, the Port Optimizer, to further improve efficiency, lower impacts on our communities and make us more competitive. We’re grateful to the state of California and GO-Biz for being the first state to step up with policy and funding to enhance supply chain digitalization,” commented Gene Seroka, executive director at Port of Los Angeles.
