Port of Long Beach appoints new environmental planning leader

The Long Beach Board of Harbor Commissioners has approved the appointment of Renee Moilanen as the new director of Environmental Planning for the Port of Long Beach’s sustainability initiatives.

Moilanen will oversee the Environmental Planning division, which is responsible for key environmental policies and programs such as the Green Port Policy and the San Pedro Bay Ports Clean Air Action Plan (CAAP).

These initiatives aim to improve air, water, and soil quality, preserve wildlife habitats, and integrate sustainable practices into the Port’s operations. Since introducing the Green Port Policy in 2005, diesel emissions at the Port have decreased by 91%, significantly enhancing the biodiversity and health of the harbour.

In addition, Moilanen will assume her new role on 15 July. She was most recently the director of Ports at Build Momentum, where she developed campaigns for transformative water, energy, transportation, and manufacturing technologies. She also has experience as a consultant for Starcrest Consulting Group, assisting with the Port’s annual emissions inventory.

Furthermore, Moilanen’s career at the Port of Long Beach began in 2006, and she has previously held positions as manager of Air Quality Practices from 2014 to 2019, as well as Environmental Specialist, Environmental Specialist Associate, and Communications Administrative Analyst.

She holds a bachelor’s degree in English from the University of Florida and a master’s degree in public policy with a focus on health policy from the University of California, Los Angeles.
