Port of NY and NJ achieves an all-time record

The Port of New York and New Jersey hit an all-time monthly record in August. Total volume for August 2018 was 651,752 TEUs (371,710 lifts) versus 631,404 TEUs (361,565 lifts) in August 2017, a 3.2% increase. Import loads (TEUs) were up by 4% in August 2018 vs. August 2017 and export loads (TEUs) decreased 0.2% in August 2018 vs. August 2017. Export empties increased 4.3% totaling 191,521 TEUs in August 2018 versus 183,655 TEUs in August 2017.

Import loads for the month of August totaled 333,567 TEUs (189,383 lifts) versus 320,848 TEUs (183,466 lifts) in August 2017, a 4% increase. For period January through August 2018, the Port of NY and NJ imported loads reached 2,413,228 TEUs (1,378,209 lifts) versus 2,243,551 TEUs (1,288,065 lifts) in same period of 2017, an 7.6% increase. Import empties are down 21.2% in January through August 2018 versus the same period in 2017.

Export loads for the month of August totaled 125,115 TEUs (69,773 lifts) versus 125,312 TEUs (69,324 lifts) in August 2017, a 0.2% decrease in TEU volume. For period January through August 2018, the Port of NY and NJ exported loads reached 997,945 TEUs (553,653 lifts) versus 930,527 TEUs (518,035 lifts) in same period of 2017, a 7.2% increase. Export empties totaled 1,302,572 TEUs for January through August 2018 versus 1,279,944 TEUs in the same period of 2017, an increase of 4.2%.

Rail volume increased 13% from the previous year’s August figure, totaling 57,744 containers for August 2018— an all-time record. This is the sixth consecutive month of rail volume above 50,000 containers. Rail volume, January through August 2018, is 14.1% greater than in the same period of 2017.

Autos moved through the Port of NY and NJ totaled 57,555 in August, an increase of 10.1% when compared against August 2017. Auto volume for January through August 2018 is 3.6% greater than in the same period of 2017.
