Port of Newcastle responded to the fire broke out

The morning of Friday 24/8/2018, port of Newcastle was advised of an industrial fire at its Kooragang 2 berth at Walsh Point. Emergency services were currently on site and responding to the incident. The Kooragang 2 berth closed.

After some hours the fire had been put out and the berth reopened.

Fire and Rescue NSW responded to the incident and handed the site back to Port of Newcastle at 1100.

No injuries or pollution has been reported. Port of Newcastle notified the NSW Environmental Protection Authority and Work Safe NSW.

Port of Newcastle’s CEO, Craig Carmody, said safety was the Port’s first priority and a thorough investigation into the cause of the fire was now underway.

“Port of Newcastle is currently undertaking deconstruction works at its Kooragang 2 berth as part of its Newcastle Bulk Terminal upgrade. This involves the dismantling of the berth’s existing crane infrastructure, which is now over 50 years old.

“The fire was contained to a disused conveyor belt on the crane that was being demolished. There was no ship at the berth during the incident,” said Craig.
