Port Houston records nearly 4 million TEUs in 2022

Port Houston had its busiest year in history increasing its container volume by 14% year-on-year and reaching around 4 million TEUs.

In particular, Port Houston handled 3,974,901 TEUs, which is nearly double the amount recorded six years ago in 2016 and 492,526 TEUs greater than the volume reported in 2021. At the same time, the port’s total tonnage increased 22% year on year, setting a new high of 55,060,963 short tons.

From January through November, the Port sustained double-digit growth at the Bayport and Barbours Cut container terminals. Volumes fell in December compared to the record 2021 activity, reflecting a decrease in demand at other gates around the United States.

In December, 292,027 TEUs were handled at Port Houston, a 12% decline from December 2021. Loaded container imports declined by 16%, while exports grew by 7% year-on-year.

“The record growth seen over the last couple of years has been supported by continued investments in Port Houston terminals as well as the immense dedication of the Port Houston staff and ILA labour who are committed to moving our region’s cargo. As we always have, as we head into 2023 we will continue to stay in front of the curve to provide exceptional service,” commented Roger Guenther, executive director at Port Houston.
