Peel Ports Clydeport appoints new Head of Marine

Alex McIntosh has been appointed as the new Head of Marine at Peel Ports Clydeport, making her the first woman to hold this position within the port group in Scotland.

Based at the Port of Greenock, Alex McIntosh will oversee the safe navigation of various vessels, from luxury cruise ships to container ships, across 450 square miles of water.

Her career with Peel Ports began in early 2010 when she became the company’s first female pilot in Scotland. After spending over three years in that role, she moved to the Port of Aberdeen, where she advanced to the position of Harbour Master.

The statutory harbour authority area under Peel Ports Clydeport covers a vast region of the West of Scotland, stretching up to Loch Fyne on the west coast of Argyll and Bute, as well as parts of Ayrshire, Glasgow, and surrounding areas.

McIntosh’s appointment comes at a busy time for the Port of Greenock, which recently received two new US$32 million cranes. She leads a team of five at the port, supported by an additional 20 members in the wider department responsible for navigating the authority’s waters.

Peel Ports is actively working to increase female representation in the maritime industry. In 2022, the group welcomed its first female apprentice in Scotland, marking a significant step in their ongoing efforts.

“It’s fantastic to have Alex back in the business. Alex is returning with a wealth of experience and is extremely well-respected in our industry. We hope that success stories like Alex’s can inspire more women to consider a job in the port industry, which is extremely varied. Our port sector has been historically male-dominated and we’re keen to grow the numbers of women in our business and across the wider sector,” stated Jim McSporran, Port Director at Peel Ports Clydeport.
