The Pilbara region has reached a significant milestone, with a record 758.3 million tonnes of exports passing through its ports in the 2023-24 financial year.
This achievement marks the fifth consecutive year of record-breaking throughput for Pilbara Ports.
The Port of Port Hedland played a key role in this success, contributing 573.6 million tonnes and reinforcing its position as one of Australia’s most valuable ports.
"The Pilbara is the economic powerhouse of the nation, and these impressive results are a clear example of that. The State Government continues to invest in infrastructure projects that fuel future prosperity and support regional jobs growth," stated David Michael, Ports Minister.
The commodities exported through Pilbara Ports in 2023-24 were valued at approximately US$173.2 billion, underscoring the region's critical importance to both the national economy and the global supply chain.
Investment by the Commonwealth and State Governments in major projects, such as Lumsden Point at the Port of Port Hedland and the Dampier Cargo Wharf at the Port of Dampier, is fueling demand for regional jobs in the Pilbara. Notably, 74% of Pilbara Ports' contract spending remains within Western Australia, with nearly 45% going to Pilbara-based businesses.
Pilbara Ports are essential to Australia's iron ore trade, handling around 80% of the national trade and 43% of the global trade.
Salt exports through the ports of Port Hedland and Dampier totalled 7.1 million tonnes in 2023-24, representing about 51% of Australia’s salt production.
This strong financial performance was achieved with over 7,700 safe vessel visits, averaging 21 per day across four operational ports.
"Communities in the Pilbara continue to benefit from the success of our ports, with many local businesses being involved in achieving this strong result. Our ports are gateways connecting the Pilbara to the global market, and I am proud of the significant impact we make on the world stage," mentioned Kevin Michel Pilbara MLA.
