MSC’s plan to develop the Can Gio International Container Transshipment Port in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam is gaining pace.
Phan Van Mai, chairman of the People’s Committee of Ho Chi Minh City, said at a meeting on 23 October that it is actively discussing the port development with the Ministry of Transport and MSC.
Located at the estuary of Cai Mep river, the Can Gio port, in a suburban coastal district in Ho Chi Minh City, is deep enough to accommodate ultra-large container ships on routes to Europe, the Americas and Africa.
The investment, estimated at US$6 billion, would be carried out through MSC’s terminal operating subsidiary, Terminal Investment Limited (TIL). Vietnam Maritime Corporation (VIMC, formerly Vinalines) will also be participating in the investment. VIMC signed a memorandum of understanding with MSC during the COP26 conference in Glasgow in November 2021.
Mai said that Can Gio port could provide a breakthrough in Vietnam’s maritime development by complementing Cai Mep port. Can Gio port is estimated to be three times the size of nearby Cat Lai port.
Mai noted that construction of Can Gio port will be carried out in seven phases from 2024 to 2040, with the first phase slated to start in 2024 and be completed in 2028.
