Maersk tops intra-north Europe additions through Gemini’s hub and spoke concept

Maersk has announced an increase in its Emergency Contingency Surcharge (ECS) for shipments from the Indian Subcontinent to North Europe.

Over the past year, Maersk Line has added the most capacity to the intra-North Europe market. The Danish line has increased its market share from just 3.7%, or 9,300 TEU last year, to 13.5% today, to just under 40,000 TEU.

Maersk’s extra capacity of 30,000 TEU originates from the ‘hub and spoke’ concept that was implemented earlier this year with its ‘Gemini Cooperation’ partner Hapag-Lloyd.

Alphaliner noted in its report today that Maersk made the biggest jump in the league of North Europe’s largest operators.
