A.P. Moller-Maersk has ordered 110 additional Volvo VNR electric Class 8 trucks, which will be deployed on its North America network and will be delivered by the end of the first quarter of 2023.
"We move decisively towards building an end-to-end, landside decarbonisation offering for our customers, in line with our target to extend Maersk net-zero efforts to all transport modes in our global operation," stated Vincent Clerc, CEO of ocean & logistics at A.P. Moller–Maersk.
The investment follows the previous order of 16 Volvo VNR Electric trucks in August 2021, as part of Maersk’s Environment Social Governance (ESG) strategy to decarbonise logistics, as well as to achieve zero-carbon operations in trucking by 2040.
"This is the second time in less than a year that Volvo Trucks has had the opportunity to announce that a Maersk Company has placed the largest order of Volvo VNR Electrics to date, which underscores their organisation’s commitment to reducing its carbon footprint," commented Peter Voorhoeve, president of Volvo Trucks North America.
The Volvo Electric trucks, which are being built in Dublin of Virginia, US, will be used in Southern California for short-haul warehouse and distribution centre operations.
In addition, electric charging infrastructure for Performance Team- A Maersk Company’s Santa Fe Springs facility in California will be installed in April-May 2022 and is expected to be operational in June.
"Maersk North America’s long-term goal is to move toward a fully electric trucking fleet to offer customers an environmentally-friendly alternative for short-haul trucking," stated Narin Phol, regional managing director at Maersk North America.
The order was prepared in collaboration with Volvo Trucks’ largest West Coast dealership, TEC Equipment, which is the first to achieve the Volvo Certified Electric Vehicle (EV) Dealer designation in North America.
The company's Fontana and La Mirada locations in Southern California are expected support Maersk distribution services and the Performance Team in maximising the uptime of their Volvo VNR Electric fleets.
Maersk has announced it is expecting to deploy 450 electric trucks in North America from various manufacturers in 2022-2023.
