Liebherr wins STS crane order for Baltimore container terminal

Liebherr has secured an order for seven ship-to-shore (STS) cranes for the new Sparrows Point Container Terminal (SPCT) in Baltimore, Maryland.

Tradepoint Atlantic and Terminal Investment Limited (TiL) are developing the 168-acre terminal at the Port of Baltimore. The project is one of the largest privately financed container terminal developments in the United States, with an investment of approximately US$1.2 billion.

The new terminal is expected to increase the Port of Baltimore’s container handling capacity by around 70%.

The seven STS cranes will handle ultra-large container vessels and allow two ships to operate simultaneously.

Each crane features a 70-metre outreach, a 25-metre backreach and a lift height over rail of 51 metres. The cranes also include advanced control systems and digital technologies to support safe and efficient operations.

The order strengthens Liebherr’s position in the U.S. market. Since 2020, the company has secured orders for 27 STS cranes across the country.

TiL CEO Ammar Kanaan said the project will improve capacity and efficiency across the Mid-Atlantic and Midwest regions while supporting the future of the U.S. supply chain.

Liebherr said the project reinforces its long-term commitment to supporting next-generation container terminals across North America.
