Korean Register (KR) and Hanwha Ocean will jointly develop two concepts for an 18,000-cbm LNG bunkering vessel.
The companies signed a memorandum of understanding on 16 September during Gastech 2026 in Bangkok. The project will explore two different cargo containment systems for ship-to-ship LNG bunkering operations.
Two cargo tank solutions under development
The first vessel concept will use Hanwha Ocean’s MCTIB system, an independent Type-B cargo tank made from high-manganese steel.
The second will use independent Type-C tanks. By developing both options, the companies aim to address different operational requirements while balancing cargo handling, safety and costs.
Hanwha Ocean will lead the basic design and assess vessel performance. Its work will include the cargo tank arrangement, LNG bunkering system and operating concept.
KR to assess designs for AiP
KR will review both concepts from the early design stage, focusing on safety, regulatory compliance and operational efficiency.
Following the technical review, the classification society will assess the designs for Approval in Principle (AiP).
The project comes as the number of LNG-fuelled vessels continues to increase, creating additional demand for infrastructure capable of supplying LNG as a marine fuel.
“With the tightening of global environmental regulations and the growing number of LNG-fueled vessels, the LNG bunkering market’s growth potential continues to expand,” said Sangdon Kang, Executive Vice President of Hanwha Ocean.
The agreement does not include a vessel order or construction schedule.
