HMM partners with JNPA to develop new mega container port in India

HMM has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA) to collaborate on the development of Vadhvan Port in India.

Under the agreement, HMM will assist in the development and operation of Vadhvan Port, a major Indian government initiative aimed at becoming one of the world’s top 10 container ports by 2040. The port is designed to handle 23 million TEUs annually and will feature nine container terminals.

With a natural depth of 20 meters—surpassing the 15.5 meters at Nhava Sheva—the port will be capable of accommodating the largest boxships, providing connectivity to India’s inland logistics network.

India’s rapidly expanding market has attracted global attention, prompting HMM to grow its regional services. These include the launch of the India North Europe Express (INX) in February, along with existing routes such as the Far East-India Mediterranean (FIM) and India-America Express (IAX).

An HMM official stated, “We hope this partnership leads to strong cooperation for port development. We will continue investing in terminals to grow our integrated logistics business, a key part of our mid-to-long-term strategy.”
