HHLA doubles storage capacity at Container Terminal Tollerort

Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG has expanded its capacity for handling Airbus aircraft parts at Container Terminal Tollerort.

Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG has expanded its capacity for handling Airbus aircraft parts at Container Terminal Tollerort, opening new storage bays in a joint ceremony with shipping company COSCO Shipping and Airbus.

The expansion doubles the terminal’s storage capacity to a total of 20 bays for Airbus segments, enabling increased shipment volumes of aircraft components through the Port of Hamburg to China.

Airbus has transported pre-assembled fuselage segments from its Hamburg factory to CTT since 2008, where the components are temporarily stored in a specially designated area before being loaded onto COSCO Shipping vessels for transport to Tianjin, where final aircraft assembly takes place.

In 2025, the terminal handled just under 300 aircraft parts weighing more than 5,000 tonnes in total, reflecting the scale of demand that prompted the capacity expansion.

The upgrade includes a newly developed mooring technique that significantly improves the efficiency of handling processes, alongside an extended wind barrier designed to protect sensitive cargo from external weather factors.

The CTT service team maintains specially trained staff to meet the stringent safety and handling requirements of the aviation industry, conducting regular standardised inspections to ensure compliance with all relevant standards.

Jaber Ghanim, HHLA project manager at CTT, described the expansion as laying the foundation for further growth in export activity for one of Hamburg’s most important industrial companies, expressing satisfaction at supporting partners in bringing high-quality European products to international markets.

He credited the project team at Tollerort for successfully delivering the expansion while maintaining normal terminal operations throughout the construction period.
