European partners to create ammonia terminal and storage facility in Rotterdam

Horisont Energi and Koole Terminals have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to jointly create an ammonia terminal and storage facility at the Port of Rotterdam.

In particular, the Norwegian clean energy company Horisont Energi and Koole Terminals, the independent storage and logistics company, will establish a relationship for the storage of ammonia which is produced and shipped from Norway to Rotterdam.

The agreement will also cover technical and commercial conceptual models for storage of ammonia products, services solutions and technologies for further distribution, according to a statement, in order to meet forecast demand in Northwest Europe.

"As Horisont Energi and our partners work towards developing Europe’s first world-scale clean ammonia project, it is essential to establish relationships with key storage, handling and transport partners in the region, to ensure our clean ammonia can reach all potential clients," stated Bjørgulf Haukelidsæter Eidesen, CEO of Horisont Energi.

These plans are following the Barents Blue project, Europe’s first large-scale production facility for blue ammonia, based on using natural gas, clean water and renewable energy which was announced by Horisont Energi earlier this August, in cooperation with the oil and gas producers Equinor and Vår Energi.

Koole Terminals will facilitate the distribution of ammonia from the Barents Blue production plant in Hammerfest of Northern Norway.

"We are eager to work with Horisont Energi to materialise their European distribution hub for blue ammonia," noted CEO of Koole Terminals, John Kraakman, who claimed that ammonia is considered as one of the important future liquid energy carriers.
