East Asia remains the world’s largest container export region

East Asia remained the largest container export region in June 2026, according to EconDB operational estimates.

The region generated an estimated 7.20 million TEU of exports during the month. This represented nearly one-third of the global total.

The wider dataset, which covers February 2022 through June 2026, also shows that East Asia held the leading position in every month shown. Europe and Southeast Asia consistently formed the next two largest regional groups.

Regional share of estimated container exports in June 2026

Rank Region Estimated exports (TEU) Share of total
1 East Asia 7,196,581 32.8%
2 Europe 3,978,312 18.2%
3 Southeast Asia 3,910,668 17.9%
4 Latin America 1,477,716 6.7%
5 Africa 1,331,763 6.1%
6 South Asia 1,293,788 5.9%
7 North America 1,270,594 5.8%
8 Others 864,292 3.9%
9 Middle East 584,752 2.7%

Shares were calculated against EconDB’s estimated global export total of 21,908,465 TEU for June 2026.

East Asia retains a clear lead

East Asia accounted for 32.8% of estimated global container exports in June. Its volume was around 3.2 million TEU higher than Europe, the second-largest region.

The historical series shows the same broad pattern throughout the period. East Asia recorded the highest regional export volume in every month displayed between February 2022 and June 2026.

Monthly volumes changed over time. However, no other region overtook East Asia during the period covered by the dataset.

Europe and Southeast Asia remain close

Europe ranked second in June with an estimated 3.98 million TEU. Southeast Asia followed closely with 3.91 million TEU.

The gap between the two regions was therefore less than 70,000 TEU during the month.

Both regions remained well below East Asia. Still, together they represented more than 36% of estimated global container exports in June.

Three regions account for most exports

East Asia, Europe and Southeast Asia together generated approximately 68.8% of the estimated global container export volume in June 2026.

This concentration remained visible throughout the historical series. The same three regions consistently occupied the leading positions, despite regular monthly fluctuations.

The data therefore points to a stable regional structure rather than frequent changes in leadership.

Other regions maintain smaller shares

Latin America ranked fourth in June with an estimated 1.48 million TEU. Africa followed with 1.33 million TEU.

South Asia and North America recorded similar volumes of approximately 1.29 million TEU and 1.27 million TEU, respectively.

Meanwhile, the Middle East accounted for the smallest named regional share in the June dataset, at an estimated 584,752 TEU.

A stable regional hierarchy since 2022

The monthly figures show clear fluctuations in total exports and regional volumes. Nevertheless, the hierarchy at the top remained broadly consistent.

East Asia stayed first throughout the period. Europe generally remained second, while Southeast Asia held the next leading position.
