DHL is expanding its global battery logistics network as demand grows across electric mobility, battery manufacturing and energy storage.
The logistics group has connected more than 20 EV and Battery Centers of Excellence worldwide. Further expansion is also planned.
The network combines the capabilities of DHL Supply Chain, DHL Global Forwarding and DHL Express.
It covers manufacturing logistics, transportation, warehousing and aftermarket services across key global markets.
DHL builds specialized battery logistics network
DHL said battery supply chains require specialized handling and regulatory expertise.
These requirements are becoming more complex as electrification expands beyond passenger vehicles into industrial equipment, mining and energy infrastructure.
Some battery systems now weigh more than 50 tons.
“Battery logistics is fundamentally different from traditional supply chains,” said Francisco Milián, Head of Inbound to Manufacturing, DHL Supply Chain EMEA.
“Customers need specialized capabilities throughout the entire battery lifecycle, from inbound logistics and manufacturing support to storage, distribution, refurbishment, returns and recycling.”
DHL’s dedicated facilities combine specialized warehousing with services such as battery diagnostics, testing and charging.
They also provide conditioning, repair, reverse logistics and preparation for recycling.
New battery facilities in Europe
In Halle, Germany, DHL recently made 13,000 square meters of battery-ready warehouse space available.
The company is also preparing another specialized battery logistics facility in Hungary. It is expected to become operational in 2027.
Many of the facilities combine warehousing with transportation, customs and cross-border logistics services.
DHL said the network will connect manufacturing hubs, emerging gigafactory clusters and energy infrastructure projects.
“The energy transition is creating entirely new trade corridors and supply chain patterns,” said Hendrik Venter, Global CEO, DHL Supply Chain.
“Customers are redesigning global supply chains to support electric mobility, energy storage and renewable energy deployment at scale.”
DHL delivers more than 1,100 BESS units
DHL is also expanding its role in large-scale Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) projects.
During the first half of 2026, the company delivered more than 1,100 BESS units worldwide.
DHL Global Forwarding and its Industrial Projects unit provide freight transportation, dangerous goods compliance, project logistics and heavy-lift services for these projects.
The company is also using its Heavy Weight Express service for time-critical battery shipments.
New Energy is one of DHL Group’s growth sectors under its Strategy 2030.
Its activities cover eight areas, including wind, solar, EVs and batteries, BESS, EV charging, grid infrastructure, hydrogen and alternative fuels.
DHL aims to grow its New Energy business to €3 billion by 2030.
