Crewman missing after falling overboard Vietnamese bulker

One seafarer has gone missing while three others were rescued after falling overboard from a bulk carrier anchored at Taiwan’s Kaohsiung port.

The Maritime Port Bureau said it received a call for assistance at 5.08 pm local time on 17 October.

The bureau stated that four of the 22 crewmen on the 56,000 DWT VIMC Sunrise, owned by Vietnam Maritime Corporation, had fallen into the water while working on the vessel.

S&P Global’s vessel-tracking data shows that VIMC Sunrise arrived at Kaohsiung’s Container Terminal No. 4 on 17 October, after departing Kemaman, Malaysia, on 29 September.

Two patrol vessels and one helicopter were dispatched by the Taiwan Coast Guard to search for the seafarers.

Of the three rescued, two suffered leg fractures and one had a fractured arm. They were conveyed to Yuan’s General Hospital for treatment.

Rough waters and strong winds hampered the search for the missing crewman and as of now, helicopters are continuing to search for him.
