Boluda Towage launches operations at Abu Qir Container Terminal in Egypt

In January 2024, Boluda Towage initiated towage operations at Abu Qir’s Container Terminal in Egypt, deploying three tugs.

The first container vessel that was operated by Boluda Towage’s tugs VB Amon and VB Horus was the 2002-built, 4,367 TEU Zhong Gu Ji Lin on 9 January. Subsequently, on 12 January, the tugs assisted the arrival of a second container vessel, Mao Gang Shanghai into the port.

“Abu Qir is a port in full motion, and the port developments perfectly fit with the ambitions of the Boluda Towage Division. The presence in Egypt and the Middle East is a further step towards strengthening and expanding our global activities. We are proud to be part of the developments and that we have been able to respond well to the demands of
the port authority and container terminal,” stated Vicente Boluda Fos, president of Boluda Corporación Marítima.

In support of towage operations in Egypt, Boluda Towage has established a dedicated onshore team operating from an office in Abu Qir. Initially deploying three high-powered tugs – VB Amon, VB Horus, and VB Ahmose – each boasting a bollard pull of 75 tonnes and equipped with firefighting capabilities.

Vicente Boluda Fos added, “We would like to thank the close cooperation with the Egyptian Navy and Hutchison Ports for all their support during the launch of our operations.”

Boluda Towage strategically acquired two tractor tugs, VB Amon and VB Horus, from Sanmar Shipyards, and one ASD tug, VB Ahmose, from Med Marine Shipyards. Featuring modern designs, VB Amon and VB Horus are exclusive-to-Sanmar Tractor-Z 2500SX models, while VB Ahmose is a Ramparts 2500-W ASD delivered by Med Marine.

This formidable fleet, tailored for the port of Abu Qir, showcases versatile capabilities with a 75-tonne pulling capacity, encompassing essential functions such as towing, pushing, mooring, escort services, firefighting operations, and terminal support.
