Zhonggu newbuildings among Yangzijiang’s 22 new boxship orders

Ten 4,600TEU container ships commissioned by Chinese domestic liner operator Zhonggu Logistics are among the 22 boxship orders won by Chinese ship builder Yangzijiang Shipbuilding since the start of 2021.

[s2If is_user_logged_in()]The Singapore-listed Yangzijiang said in a regulatory filing on 8 February that the other container ship orders comprised of four 24,000TEU vessels and eight 1,800TEU vessels.

While Yangzijiang did not name the customers behind the other container ship orders, it is possible that Seaspan Corporation had ordered two of the 24,000TEU ships, as the Canadian tonnage provider had recently disclosed commissioning a pair of such vessels at an unnamed yard.

Zhonggu, a new customer to Yangzijiang, said on 20 January that it plans to order up to 18 ships and the company may choose another Chinese shipyard to build the remaining eight vessels.

Shipbrokers have named another Chinese company, StarOcean Marine, an affiliate of liner operator Goto Shipping International, as the customer behind the eight 1,800TEU vessels.

Yangzijiang CEO and executive chairman Ren Letian said, “We’re glad to have secured more orders for the ultra-large, 24,000TEU containership shortly after securing Yangzijiang’s first batch of such orders only in December last year.”
