ZHD Stevedores orders Liebherr’s first all-electric crane

ZHD Stevedores has confirmed the order of Liebherr’s first all-electric crane, which was recently launched and has a hook lifting capacity of up to 105 tonnes and a maximum grab capability of up to 90 tonnes.

The crane will be utilised for bulk handling in the Rotterdam region, as well as at ZHD terminals in Dordrecht and Moerdijk in the Netherlands.

Liebherr said that new features were added to the crane, such as exterior comfort access to the cabin, possible cabin enlargement to 10 m³, and an enhanced boom design.

The prototype of the CBG 500 E was still in development at the time of collaboration between ZHD and Liebherr during the early project phases in 2021.

The crane uses cutting-edge driving technology and Liebherr’s in-house designed crane management system “Master V.” Another highlight is the LiCaTronic energy recovery technology, which maximises the use of available energy (source).

The all-electric CBG 500 E prototype will remain on the test rig at Liebherr’s Rostock facility until the third quarter of 2023. The crane will then be installed on ZHD’s rebuilt barge “Ahoy 50.”

The “Ahoy 50” floating crane can function with either shore power or onboard power when a link to the terminal is unavailable. The onboard power will be generated by newly installed Stage V gensets that meet the industry’s strictest emission requirements.

The crane’s construction is expected to be completed in October 2023, with operation beginning in the Netherlands around December 2023-January 2024.
