A new chapter in sustainable maritime transport unfolded today at the Port of Piraeus, as the cutting-edge car carrier YUAN HAI KOU made its inaugural call to Greece’s premier port. Fresh from its launch in May 2025 at Guangzhou’s renowned Nansha Auto Terminal, the vessel’s arrival underscores both the growing significance of Sino-Greek maritime relations and the shipping industry’s rapid shift toward greener technologies.
Operated by Guangzhou Yuanhai Auto Carrier Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of COSCO Shipping Specialized Carriers, the YUAN HAI KOU is more than just a vessel, it’s a blueprint for the future. Powered by dual-fuel LNG engines, it achieves remarkable environmental performance: a 27% reduction in CO₂ emissions, virtually eliminating sulfur oxides (SOx) and particulate matter, and delivering around 20% energy savings compared to conventional ships.
The YUAN HAI KOU also brings sustainability to a human level. Onboard, automated hydroponic gardens purify the air and provide fresh produce to the crew. A thoughtful addition that speaks volumes about the growing attention to seafarers’ wellbeing on long voyages.
