X-Press Feeders hit with US$1 billion damages for X-Press Pearl disaster

Sri Lanka’s courts have ordered X-Press Feeders to pay US$1 billion in compensation for the environmental damage resulting from the X-Press Pearl fire off Colombo in May 2021. The decision, announced on 24 July, has disappointed the Singapore-based company.



The first instalment of US$250 million must be paid by 23 September 2025. By end-January 2026, another US$500 million should be paid, and the final US$250 million, within one year of the judgement.
