The World Shipping Council (WSC), representing the collective voice of liner shipping, announced the appointment of Joe Kramek as its new president and chief executive officer (CEO).
Kramek will succeed John Butler, who will retire at the end of July. With a wealth of experience spanning both the maritime industry and government service, Kramek is well-equipped to assume this leadership role, according to the WSC announcement.
“I am deeply honoured to assume the role of President & CEO at the World Shipping Council, building on the foundation laid by John Butler. Together with the dedicated team at WSC, I look forward to addressing the evolving needs of the shipping industry and continue driving positive change,” stated Joe Kramek.
Kramek has served as the WSC’s Director of US Government Relations. His background includes 28 years as a commissioned officer with the US Coast Guard, where he held various roles at sea and served as Chief of Maritime, International, and Environmental Law. Notably, Kramek led the US Delegation to the International Maritime Organization’s Legal Committee during his tenure with the Coast Guard.
According to the WSC statement, in his new role, Kramek will guide the organization through its next chapter of growth, advocating for socially responsible, environmentally sustainable, and safe global maritime trade.
Recognizing the significant contributions of the retiring president & CEO John Butler, who steered the WSC through unprecedented supply chain challenges and transformed it into a global trade association, Kramek expressed deep appreciation for his predecessor’s remarkable dedication and leadership.
“It has been a privilege to lead the World Shipping Council during a time of significant growth and complexity in the maritime sector. I am confident that with Joe’s extensive experience and committed leadership, WSC will continue to flourish and develop even further, and I wish him, and the entire team continued success in the years ahead,” commented John Butler.
Furthermore, the two executives will collaborate closely in the coming months to implement the succession plan, with Joe Kramek expected to officially take on the responsibilities of president & CEO on 1 August 2024.
