World Container Index falls 3%

Drewry’s World Container Index (WCI) dropped 3% last week to US$2,424 per FEU, according to Japan International Freight Forwarders Association (JIFFA). The decline continues a period of relative stability after months of volatility.

Rates spiked in May and early June following U.S. tariff announcements in April. By mid-July, prices had fallen sharply, but the pace of decline has since slowed.

On the trans-Pacific, spot rates fell again. Shanghai to Los Angeles dropped 4% (US$98) to US$2,534 per FEU. Shanghai to New York saw a bigger fall of 7% (US$309) to US$3,826 per FEU.

From Shanghai to Genoa, rates were down 4% (US$135) to US$3,227 per FEU. Shanghai to Rotterdam held steady at US$3,276 per FEU.

In the trans-Atlantic market, New York to Rotterdam slipped 3% (US$23) to US$853 per FEU. Rotterdam to New York stayed unchanged at US$1,996 per FEU.
