WiseTech and Hapag-Lloyd launch IoT container tracking pilot

WiseTech Global and Hapag-Lloyd have launched a pilot project to integrate IoT-based container tracking, aiming to deliver real-time visibility across global supply chains. The initiative connects Hapag-Lloyd’s live container data with WiseTech’s CargoWise platform.

Under the pilot, Hapag-Lloyd’s fleet of around two million containers transmits frequent location updates through IoT devices. WiseTech ingests and processes millions of data points each day, using advanced algorithms to convert raw data into meaningful operational milestones.

The data is distributed to customers through CargoWise tools such as Cargo Tracker and Container Automation, with additional channels planned via GLO, INTTRA, and Neo. The goal is to shift from retrospective tracking to proactive supply chain management.

The collaboration enables real-time insights into container position, transit conditions, and arrival predictions. Customers can detect delays, route deviations, and potential disruptions before they impact operations.

Hapag-Lloyd has also introduced a dynamic estimated time of arrival tool, Live ETA, which adjusts in real time based on IoT location data across all transport modes. For end-to-end shipments, the system improves delivery time accuracy by up to 75% compared with traditional schedule-based forecasts.

Both companies said the pilot marks a key step toward data-driven logistics execution. The partners will now refine data quality and usability at scale, with the aim of developing a fully commercial ocean container visibility solution integrated into WiseTech’s digital ecosystem.
