WinGD to deliver methanol engines for COSCO boxships

WinGD, a sustainable energy systems provider, will deliver 10X92DF-M methanol-fueled engines for four 16,000 TEU container vessels being constructed at COSCO Shipping Heavy Industry for COSCO SHIPPING Lines in Yangzhou.

This order was made on 23 March with a signing event witnessed by COSCO and China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC) officials.

The methanol engines will be supplied by CSSC CMD in Shanghai, which is creating the engines in collaboration with WinGD. The fourth vessel in the line will be the first to be outfitted with methanol engines from the start. The early vessels will be outfitted with methanol-ready X92-B engines and converted to methanol before starting service.

These vessels will be among the first methanol-fueled container vessels constructed in China, representing a major investment in the country’s green transformation plan.

According to WinGD, the X92DF-M engines will be based on the popular X92-B engine, which has been used for many years by major container carriers such as COSCO SHIPPING Lines, MSC and CMA CGM.

As soon as the fourth vessel in the line is shipped, WinGD will offer a methanol package for the X92-B engine, opening the market for existing vessels with X92-B engines to be changed to use the carbon-neutral fuel.
