Wilson Sons adds new tug at Brazilian terminals

Wilson Sons has initiated operations of the WS Dorado at the Ponta da Madeira, Itaqui, and Alumar terminals in São Luís, Maranhão.

This marks the addition of the fifth highly powerful tugboat equipped with advanced sustainable technology in a series of six 2513-class tugboats. Crafted by Damen Shipyards of the Netherlands, this project contributes positively to all Brazilian ports under the company’s operation.

Manufactured at the Guarujá (SP) shipyards, the new tug will enhance docking and undocking activities at these terminals, serving large iron ore export vessels carrying up to 400,000 tonnes of cargo. The WS Dorado now joins the company’s fleet of 11 tugboats in the region.

At Vale’s Ponta da Madeira Terminal, these tugs play a crucial role in supporting iron ore shipments. Positioned strategically close to major consumer markets such as the US, Europe, and China, this terminal serves as a primary gateway for Brazilian iron ore exports, further boosting international trade expansion.

Meanwhile, at the Port of Itaqui, the tugs handle various cargoes including diesel, corn, soy, fertilizers, and wood pulp. Notably, the port excels in the liquid bulk sector, having handled 8.3 million tonnes in 2023, primarily comprising oil and its derivatives.

The introduction of the WS Dorado enhances the tug fleet servicing São Luís do Maranhão’s port facilities and is anticipated to generate positive impacts by the end of July at three other Brazilian ports: Salvador (BA), Belém (PA), and Cabedelo (PB).
