WASS Submarine Systems, a Fincantieri subsidiary, has secured a major contract from the Indian Navy. The deal covers the supply of Black Shark Advanced (BSA) heavyweight torpedoes for six Scorpène-class submarines.
The contract is worth more than €200 million. It is the largest order in WASS’s history. The agreement comes in the year the company marks its 150th anniversary.
Deliveries will take place between 2028 and 2030. WASS will produce the torpedoes at its facility in Livorno, Italy. The site is a key center for underwater defense systems.
The Black Shark Advanced torpedo is already in service with the Italian Navy and six other navies worldwide. It is known for high performance, reliability, and lower lifecycle costs. The system reflects Italy’s advanced capabilities in underwater defense technology.
The contract also includes launch systems for the Scorpène submarines. It covers maintenance equipment and spare parts. This package ensures integrated and long-term support for the Indian Navy.
The deal strengthens WASS’s presence in the Indian market. It also supports Fincantieri’s broader strategy to expand in India and create future industrial synergies.
Pierroberto Folgiero, Chief Executive Officer and General Manager of Fincantieri, said:
“This agreement marks a key strategic step for Fincantieri in India, a market of central importance in our long-term international growth strategy and one of the most dynamic naval hubs globally. Strengthening our presence in India means building enduring industrial and institutional partnerships in a region that plays an increasingly pivotal role in global maritime security. We are proud to deepen our cooperation with the Indian Navy and to position Fincantieri as a trusted long-term partner in this strategic geography.”
