Wärtsilä to power biodiesel pusher tugs for AMAGGI

Wärtsilä will supply the main engines for two new pusher tugs being built for Brazilian operator AMAGGI. The vessels are under construction at the Beconal shipyard in Manaus and are designed to support low-emission river operations.

Each tug will be powered by two Wärtsilä 20 engines capable of running on both diesel and biodiesel. Fuel flexibility was a key factor in AMAGGI’s decision, supporting its strategy to reduce greenhouse gas emissions through the use of sustainable biofuels. The order was booked in the fourth quarter of 2025.

The engines will deliver a combined output of 2,100 kW per vessel. This will allow each tug to push up to 20 barges, transporting as much as 32,000 tons of grain along the Amazon inland waterway system. The package also includes Wärtsilä’s Data Collection Unit, enabling continuous engine monitoring and improved operational reliability.

Wärtsilä said AMAGGI will become the first pusher tug operator to run its vessels entirely on biodiesel. The data collection system will support performance optimization and longer maintenance intervals.

Delivery of the Wärtsilä equipment to the shipyard is scheduled to begin in August 2026.

AMAGGI operates a river fleet of 212 barges and pusher vessels. The company has worked with Wärtsilä for more than 30 years, focusing on improving efficiency and sustainability in Brazil’s inland shipping sector.
