Wärtsilä has been chosen as the electrical integrator for a major battery upgrade on Wasaline’s ROPAX ferry Aurora Botnia. The project will expand the vessel’s battery capacity from 2.2 MWh to 12.6 MWh, making it the world’s largest marine battery hybrid system in operation. The order was booked in Q3 2025, with commissioning set for early 2026.
The upgrade includes Wärtsilä’s Energy Management System, upgraded power drives, and control integration. The Aurora Botnia, already operating on biogas and battery power, will use the enhanced system to further reduce fuel consumption and emissions.
The initiative builds on Wärtsilä and Wasaline’s long-standing cooperation and supports both companies’ commitment to decarbonised shipping and advancing hybrid technologies.
