Wärtsilä secures repeat order for Aasen Shipping Bulk Carrier

Wärtsilä will supply a hybrid propulsion system for a 9,500 DWT bulk carrier being built at Royal Bodewes shipyard in the Netherlands for Norwegian shipowner Aasen Shipping. This vessel is the latest in a series of six equipped with Wärtsilä systems. The order was booked in Q3 2025.

Aasen Shipping is focused on reducing emissions, cutting fuel costs, and minimizing carbon costs. The Wärtsilä 25 engine, combined with the hybrid system, allows the company to optimise operations, save fuel, and improve sustainability.

“The performance of Wärtsilä’s equipment on earlier ships has reinforced our commitment to efficient and cleaner cargo transport,” said Torbjørn Torkelsen, CEO of Aasen Shipping. “The Wärtsilä 25 engine is future-proof and can switch to sustainable fuels as they become available.”

The hybrid system includes:

  • One six-cylinder Wärtsilä 25 main engine with NOx Reducer

  • Wärtsilä gearbox and controllable pitch propeller with shaft line

  • Wärtsilä ProTouch remote propulsion control

  • DC hub with 620 kWh battery capacity

  • Integrated power, battery, and energy management systems

The Wärtsilä 25 is a medium-speed 4-stroke marine engine, upgradeable to low or zero-carbon fuels. It delivers 1.7–3.4 MW, available in 6L to 9L configurations, suitable as main or auxiliary engine.

“The shipping industry is moving toward electrified and hybrid solutions,” said Roger Holm, President of Wärtsilä Marine. “Our hybrid systems allow vessels to operate efficiently across multiple modes, improving fuel efficiency and performance.”

Delivery of the equipment to the shipyard is scheduled for the first half of 2027.
