Wärtsilä, Elomatic formalize licensing and collaboration agreement on Elogrid™ technology

Technology group Wärtsilä and international consulting and engineering firm Elomatic have entered into a licensing and collaboration agreement for the Elogrid™ technology.

This agreement encompasses the intellectual property rights, technology, and trademark use of Elomatic’s innovative Elogrid solution.

Elogrid, a transverse thruster grid technology, aims to decrease fuel consumption and boost thruster efficiency. It optimizes water flow along the hull when a ship is in motion and improves the flow into the tunnel during thruster operation, allowing for enhanced thruster capacity utilization with reduced noise and vibration.

The agreement was signed in December 2024.

Under the terms of the agreement, Wärtsilä is authorized to sell, produce, install, and maintain the licensed technology within specified sales territories for a duration of 12 years, including periodic reviews.

Rami Hirsimäki, Senior Vice President of Marine at Elomatic, expressed enthusiasm about continuing their longstanding collaboration with Wärtsilä, stating that “Wärtsilä’s global presence in the marine industry will significantly enhance the market reach for Elogrid.”

Lauri Tiainen, Director of Thruster and Propulsion Control Systems at Wärtsilä Marine, highlighted the strategic importance of the collaboration as he remarked that “This partnership leverages Wärtsilä’s specialized knowledge in transverse thruster technology to explore new market avenues for Elogrid.”

The Elogrid technology is adaptable to most types of vessels equipped with transverse thrusters, particularly benefiting those with larger thrusters and operating at moderate to high speeds.
