Wan Hai christens new 13,100 TEU container vessel

Continuing its fleet expansion and modernization efforts, Taiwanese shipping company Wan Hai Lines held a ship naming ceremony for its 13,100 TEU newbuilding Wan Hai A18 on 27 March at Samsung Heavy Industries Geoje shipyard in South Korea.

Yung-Chen Huang, President of Mega International Commercial Bank Co., performed the christening rituals, bestowing blessings on the vessel for good fortune and safe journeys.

Wan Hai Lines has signed a total of thirteen 13,100 TEU container ships with Samsung Heavy Industries since 2021. Wan Hai A18 is the eleventh vessel in this series and is expected to be delivered in early April.

Upon delivery, the newbuild boxship will join the ocean carrier’s Asia to West Coast of South America (ASA) service.

This series of vessels has a length of 335 meters and a breadth of 51 meters, featuring new engines and various eco-friendly and energy-saving designs.

Wan Hai A18 is the first in the series to be equipped with a windshield and a shaft generator. The windshield, a large structure installed at the bow, is designed to reduce frontal wind resistance and improve fuel efficiency, while the shaft generator generates power via the ship’s main engine, which helps achieve fuel-saving effects.

In addition to naming the new vessel, Wan Hai Lines has also made a donation to a local charity organization – Jangpyeong Child Care Center.
