Virginia selects again Kalmar’s port equipment

The Port of Virginia has secured its fifth consecutive order to the Finnish cargo handling equipment manufacturer and part of Cargotec, Kalmar, for 18 hybrid shuttle carriers.

The order will be booked in Cargotec’s third quarter 2021 order intake while the delivery of the carriers is scheduled to be completed in the middle of 2022. Regarding the previous corresponding orders, they date back to 2017.

In particular, 15 of the newly-ordered machines will be delivered to Norfolk International Terminals (NIT) and three of them to Virginia International Gateway (VIG).

The US East Coast port has been using Kalmar hybrid shuttle carriers since August 2015 and with the acquisition of the new equipment, it will operate a total of 92 Kalmar hybrid shuttle carriers, in addition to the diesel-hydraulic Kalmar shuttles from the terminal’s opening in 2007.

The Senior Vice President of Technology and Projects of Port of Virginia, Rich Ceci noted that Kalmar’s hybrid technology “helps us cut fuel consumption, reduce emissions, increase operator comfort, and improve the overall sustainability of our operations.”
