Vancouver closer to new box terminal approval

The Vancouver Fraser Port Authority has proposed a new marine container port on Canada’s west coast called Roberts Bank Terminal 2.

The Roberts Bank Terminal 2 Project has already reached the end of the federal environmental evaluation procedure, which began in 2013. The port authority is hoping that the Government of Canada will make a decision soon.

Since 2013, the project has been subject to a federal environmental study. Following a six-week public hearing, the public record was closed in August 2019. The government sought further information from the port authority in August 2020. Port of Vancouver presented its answer in September 2021, after more than a year of extra technical work, consultation with 46 Indigenous groups, and involvement with government authorities.

The Vancouver Fraser Port Authority welcomes the federal minister of the environment and climate change’s “sufficiency” finding about the extra material supplied by the port authority for the Roberts Bank Terminal 2 Project.

The minister has determined that the information supplied on the project is sufficient to assist government decision-making.

The port authority’s supplementary information, submitted as part of a government information request, proved that the project could be implemented in an ecologically friendly manner. It includes greater mitigation and adaptive management methods, as well as more monitoring.

If permitted and developed, Roberts Bank Terminal 2 would play an important role in assisting Canadian exporters and consumers of goods who wish to trade with countries all around the world and will increase Canada’s west coast container terminal capacity by 30%.
