Valenciaport’s box traffic leaps again in September – China remains its top trading partner

ValenciaPort has reported firm gains in container volumes during the first nine months of the year, with the number of containers handled at the Spanish port exceeding 4.2 million, representing a rise of more than 6.6% over the first nine months of 2020.

Additionally, 813,114TEU have been exported from the port of Valencia, which translates to a 20% growth in comparison with the same period of 2020, while imports have also grown by almost 19%, completing 618,719TEU.

Furthermore, between January and September 2021, rail traffic amounted to 2.25 million tonnes, a year-on-year increase of 18.4%, according to data from the Valencia Port Authority (PAV) Statistical Bulletin.

Regarding the container traffic by geographical area in the same period, China continues to be Valenciaport’s main trading partner with 461,201TEU and an increase of almost 21%, followed by the United States with 404,321 and Turkey with 236,153TEU.

In the first nine months of 2021, containerised general cargo has grown by almost 6% in terms of tonnes to over 48.18 million tonnes, mainly driven by exports of construction materials, vehicles and transport elements, agri-foodstuffs and chemical products.

In September, container imports have grown by 42.3%, while exports have also achieved an increase of more than 17%.
